Ledeberg lost its branch library in 2014 and read in a portable cabin for nine years. The new building puts the reading room at street level behind a glazed brick arcade, the study floor above it under a cross-laminated timber roof, and the repair cafe in the old coach house at the back of the plot. Every book on the ground floor is reachable without a step. The council asked for a building that could be heated on the budget of the cabin it replaced, so the walls are 440mm of insulated brickwork and the only mechanical plant is one heat pump in the coach house.
