Our first building for the city, and the one that taught us most about what a public room has to survive. It is a single hall with a stage that folds flat, a kitchen that two caterers can work in at once, and a store big enough that nothing is ever left stacked along a wall. The floor is a sprung beech that takes badminton on a Tuesday and 220 chairs on a Wednesday. Nine years on it has been redecorated once and the floor has never been relaid.
